WE L♡VE...

Kristin is a New York based photographer who after a plethora of creative paths has found a beautiful, stripped back vintage style of shooting. She began as a ballerina, morphed into a makeup artist, now is a photographer and dj. WE ARE IN LOVE.

At Tuesday Vintage we are all about women with power and Kristin is definitely some kind of wonder woman with many hidden talents. Kristin is a one man team on her shoots, doing makeup, styling and photography. Her plethora of skills has led her to work with some big fashion magazines including playboy and purple magazine... just to pick a few. We were totally stoked to have Kristin shoot for Tuesday vintage which you can also see on our blog. You understand why we are girl crushing right?

Undoubtably we have fallen in love with not only Kristen's aesthetic but her amazing journey, which through this interview we hope to find out much more!

★★ Tell us, why photography? It seems you have had many different options of careers come your way, is photography the one for you?

- Yes photography is the one for me! I started taking photos of my friends on film for fun. I was just surrounded by a lot of beautiful and amazing women and figured why not take

some snaps while we were hanging out. I started posted the photos on social media and then brands started to reach out and that’s how it all began! I love photography because I get full creative control. I feel really inspired again! As a makeup artist, which is what I did full time before this for many years, I was burned out and feeling creatively stifled. On my own shoots I am a one woman show! I shoot, creative direct, style, prop style, and do the beauty! Its honestly so much fun. I still do makeup just not as much as before. And I DJ quite a bit so I have more than one career which keeps things fresh. I never get bored!

★★ You started off as a ballerina, do you feel that your life as a dancer has influenced your style as a photographer?

- Yes I danced for about 8 years and it was my first love! I think my life as a dancer has influenced a lot of things in my life. It gave me a thick skin! And it taught me a lot about details and precision. It also gave me discipline and my drive. I think visually it has influenced my style as a photographer

a lot as well. It really has helped to shape my life. I am grateful that is how I started as an artist.

★★ Why did you want to stop dancing and do photography?

- I stopped dancing because of injuries and I got burned out. You get to an age where you decide to go for it or leave it behind. And I realized it wasn’t the life I wanted in the

end. I took a few years after that to be a normal teenager and figure myself out. I decided that I wanted to be a makeup artist and move to NYC from California. My whole life I dreamed of moving to New York and this was my chance to do that and to work in fashion. So I did it! Eventually that led me to where I am now as a photographer!

★★ Your images have a simple, stripped back, late 60’s kind of vibe, along with hidden flecks of sexiness and an almost film still aesthetic, do you look to the past for inspiration? Do you have any films you look to for inspiration?

- Yes I most definitely look to the past for inspiration in my work! Specifically the 60’s and 70’s because I have always been obsessed with those decades. Everything from the music, films, fashion, and icons of that time. All of those things heavily influence my work and my life in general. Down to how I dress and do my own makeup/hair to the music I DJ. Films are definitely a big influence as well! I like to think my photos

have a cinematic quality to them.

★★ You have the most amazing locations, are all of these in New York? How do you come about these places? Do you travel to other places besides New York to shoot?

- Yes most of the locations are here in New York! I have only ever shot here and a few times in LA. It is hard to find retro locations here but I have managed to find some amazing spots through friends or the person I am shooting and even places I DJ at! LA is great for locations! I am planning on a trip back there next month. I cannot wait to shoot there again. And I would love to shoot abroad as well, but one step at a time!

★★ Tell us what is your favourite shoot so far and why?

- I LOVE so many of my shoots so its really hard to pick favourites but if I really had to it would have to be my Playboy story with Paige Elkington which was in the December 2016 issue! That was really a dream come true for me. I didn’t believe it was real until the magazine hit the stands! It was truly a dream shoot in a dream location with a dream team. I wish I could do it all over again. I got to shoot Paige who is a good friend of mine and we wanted it to feel like 70’s film stills and also a homage to old 60’s/70’s Playboys. Which to me, was the best era for the magazine of course! I hope I get the chance to shoot for them again.

★★ You shoot on film, have you ever switched over to digital or do you find that you don’t need to, would you ever take up some digital shooting or are you true to your vintage nature?

- I exclusively shoot on film and polaroid! And I started shooting on a Super 8 camera recently too. I have never shot digital and don’t have an interest in it to be honest. BUT I feel like eventually I may need to for certain types of jobs. For now I am going to stick to film. I really love it!

★★ You do all the hair and makeup, styling, and photography, does this become too much for you? Do you ever have to call in someone to help? Or do you love being a one woman team?

- I love doing everything on my shoots! However depending on what the shoot/job is I sometimes have a stylist or hair/makeup. For my Playboy shoot I had a stylist and hair. And I did the makeup myself. It can sometimes be a lot doing everything. But I typically find that it is more efficient and actually faster if I just do it all. And then its just me and the girl. I only shoot friends and friends of friends, girls I know! So I like to keep it as intimate as possible. I think I get the best images that way. And I want the images to feel real and a bit raw.

★★ And you DJ! Tell us about the club scene in New York? Where is your favourite place to play and what kind of music is your favourite to spin?

- Yes I DJ quite a bit actually. I started in nightlife ages ago as a host/promoter and always turned down DJ'ing but decided to give it a go a few years back and absolutely love it. I specialise in vinyl and I mainly play 60’s - 90’s rock and roll, soul, disco, post punk, punk, 60’s French pop, Brit Pop, Glam Rock, etc. And I DJ all over the city at spots like Rose Bar, Soho Grand Hotel, The Roxy, Ludlow House, Le Bain, and Boom Boom Room amongst many others. I only DJ at spots that I like. I am in a place where I can be a bit more picky which is great!

★★ If you could plan a party, as elaborate as you want, describe it to us, the location, the drinks, the theme ( if any ) and who would be your date?

- For my dream party we would have to travel back in time to 1967 and go to Warhol’s Silver Factory! My date would be Mick Jagger!
